Hi all,

I tried to read about this topic and follow what some have written but here I am with a strange behavior of the latest version of octane's Maya plug in.
I am trying to control the color of the hair with a texture (Imagine something like a carpet with a check board pattern or a zebra one).
Following the documentation way (connecting the hair color texture in the pfx texture list) I have a super weird result:
Image

If I try to connect the material only to the shader, it works better but the hair have a strange pattern and don'f follow the color of the geometry below:
Image

The texture I am trying to apply is just a color checker:

here is the scene:

Could someone be so nice to try to see if it work on his end?

Thank you in advance!

P.s. I am using maya 2016 ext 1 sp5

Hi Erberus,

Please have a look on the maya file and check in the connection on the shader.
Is working for me, maybe you did a wrong connection.

Cheers
JO

Hi Jo,

thank you for testing it, would you be so kind to attach the maya scene for me to download, I can't figure out which connection I am missing.

Thank you and regards,
Mauri

Not sure if this solves your problem but Octane like to have a transform or projection node connected to texture files.

It works.
Just plug the shader to the pfxHair node.

What does the Hair connect I/O do?

First thing, thank you guys for the help! I appreciate it!

@Jolbertoquini : it seems also you have some clumps that get colored in a non smooth way (i.e. few hair green in a purple clump) this I don't understand. Also in the scene you set up it shows colors also if no texture has been loaded in the node and if I load one the colors don't change.

@blackshore : Wow this seems quite what I wanted, it also seems you are changing the color of the clump along their length, where does't it come from and how you control it? I tried to just plug shader in the pfxhair node but this is what I get and you can clearly see black hair in white parts and vice versa.

Image

then in the manual also says to connect the texture to the node but this is what happens, completely wrong...

Blackshore would you be so nice to share your maya scene?

Thanks again guys!

Hi Mauri,

Is working perfect just connect at hypershader connection... also the variation of the colours this is normal is not octane is a usual nhair (hair/fur) option for randomness the color (tab shading/color randomization/diffuse rand and etc) just switch off then.
Also of course if you add a lot clump you will mix the hair and is a offset for the hair (base maya setting for hair whatever render engine will blend the texture cause of the offset) if you need a fur look is different you need setup a high range of hair.
(not Octane related)

My advise (not Octane related) is generate a fibermesh at zbrush and export the nurbs and import in maya create a base mesh with low amount of hair, a small polygon and attach the nurbs curve at the hair.
or convert fur on nurbs guide or shave hair cut convert to nurbs.
whatever aways you have the nurbs just attach into the hair.

hope this give you some answers.

Best
JO
