I have some Intel Core 2 Quads Q6600,and I got to wondering whether I could squeeze some gpus into them to use for octane. Any thoughts?

just to clarify; you want to disassemble the cpu (the little 40mm x 40mm part) and add an igpu (Integrated GPU) into it?

OR you want to use a machine built around a Q6600 CPU and add GPUs to it?.

The former is impossible - the later is a decent idea for a low cost build (although it would use a lot more power than a modern PC). you may also find that the maximum RAM you can achieve in a Q6600 build is less than you need for a large scene...
Nothing stopping you having a 8gb build and a 2gb VRAM GPU (gtx690's) and getting cracking performance on smaller scenes...

if you use the old Q6600 in a net rendering environment as a slave, you only need a good gigabit ethernet connection or above and a standalone licence, you could feed the old pc with whatever nvidia card you want since all the dirty work is made by the master ;)
