I would like to purchase Octane render today but I would not like to update in two weeks and pay extra for version 3.

What will come is advertised here: http://home.otoy.com/otoy-unveils-octan ... -renderer/

So, this prevents me from buying at the moment and it feels also a bit strange. Does anybody know how this is handled by otoy?

During the change from v1.x to v2.x the new version price was equal to previous version price + upgrade price, so no difference.

Eg.

Octane 2.x buy = 300
Octane 3.x buy = 400
Octane 2.x-> 3.x upgrade = 100...

No idea if that's how they will do it this time.... Not likely to be much difference; I'd say the opportunity for extra training is well worth it even if there is slight disadvantage to buy now + upgrade... Remember last time, there was no difference.

I would like to use it together with Cinema4D. So, there will be also some extra costs to get the new plugIn. At this point it feels like it is better to wait and see instead of buying :)

In a another forum was said, that otoy also does not want people to sell their licence. This of course illegal in the EU. So, I really get a bad feeling about the business practises of the company. Anyway, great software!

It will be similar with 2.x -> 3.x. We will make it so that users don't lose money buying 2.x now and upgrading to 3.x, vs. buying 3.0 when it is out.

That's good enough for me, I will buy Octane today after college.

I have the same question.....I'm very close to buying Octane Standalone + Maya Plugin. It looks like Octane 3 is way overdue now so what's the best thing to do in this situation? Will I miss out on any release deals etc....sometimes companies offer deals close to release date like "buy now and get the next version as a free upgrade"

It sounds like if I buy Octane 2 now I will have to pay the different when Octane 3 is released? Can you confirm whether this is correct?

Also when is Octane 3 coming out? seems like it's been ages since it was announced?

Thanks

Lee

Hi Lee,
as you can read in the above posts, there is no economic difference if you by now v2 and later on the v3 upgrade or you wait until the official v3 realize.
But OctaneRender v3 Standalone is already out in alpha version (currently we are at the alpha 4) and some plugins already have a v3 alpha version and others will arrive in the future. All the v2 customers can use all the alpha and beta versions until v3 will be officially out, then this versions will stop to work and you will need the v3 update, if you think that is worth for you ;)
