material picking slow

when using two gpu's I pick a material using the material picker mode, it takes about 2.5 seconds to load it in
the node graph. when using one gpu its almost instantaneous, is this normal?
gtx 580 3gb gtx 660ti 3gb win 7 blender 2.65
