I could have sworn I figured out how to do this in 1.x but now nothing I can think of seems to work. Is there a way to set a diffuse texture so that it only applies to front facing polys? I know this exists in standalone, but I need it as part of my max pipeline.

If I understand your problem,
Here is a way:
1st example = mix material with polygon side as mix amount
2nd example = set back face material to 100% opacity.
