gtx 295 or gtx 470 ?

hello petrolheads ;)

is gtx 295 a good choice for octane ?

2nd hand ones are selling for the same price of a new gtx 470

GTX 295 896MB - power 1788GFlops
GTX 470 1280MB - power 1632GFlops
GTX 460 2048MB - power 1361GFlops
GTX 460 after overclock = GTX 470 and more RAM to use

I wolud by GTX 460 2GB and overclock it.

I would suggest the same, tough you'll have to insist before actually use those 2 GBs.. :)

Also tough the 460 may be the best deal, you may think of a 470 as the prices are decreasing fast !...

you are right.

besides gtx 295 consumes a lot of power, even more than a typical 480

Just be careful you do not use 4xx cards for your opengl display - milage may vary (for example, Cinema4d is less affected), but the viewport performance in Max, Maya, Rhina, Blender, etc. is dismal with the 4xx line. I have no idea whether this is still the case with the 580. The 295 will have way better Opengl performance. The 4xx are great for rendering in Octane, though. Get a cheap Quadro for viewport performance.

Well, but they perform very well displaying with directX... :) at least in Max that I use, you have to use directX to display good lighting and shadows in the viewport - then no problem with OpenGl...
