A few years ago I did this intro for Pause festival
https://vimeo.com/29321102
It uses vray double sided material to imitate a baloon-like material for the spheres. This way the material can receive/show shadows and light at the back side of the polygons, which helps for a semi-transparent or rather thick solid look. Also very fast to render (not different than a regular mateial, almost).
So far I'm unable to obtain a similar look with Octane materials. Any direction is appreciated.

try mix material with two sub material. Use a diffuse with glossy/specular. But you should learn the materials first.
