Efficient navigation workflow in Octane...

Hi,

I am still working my way around Octane and have some simple questions regarding navigation with SpaceMouse Pro and using two 780ti GPUs.

When I first import a scene or a file, the samples are set to 16000 using direct lighting. I always seem to constantly change it to a lower sample number like 1000 and change to path tracing. I use a SpaceMouse Pro for navigating around but it sounds like the GPUs are taxing themselves as I pan around the scene. It sometimes is very slow when I am moving around or try to zoom in or out. I have both GPUs active and set as priority.

So the questions are:

1. Is there a better way of working while setting up a scene so it is less taxing on the system?

2. Is that the best way of using the two GPUs?

A little more background, machine has 4930 k, 32 mb ram, Windows 8 x64, two 780 ti, 760 for monitors. power supply is Seasonic 1250 but looks like I will be replacing it. I was wondering if it was the way I was navigating through octane that caused my power supply to shutdown automatically with this workflow. The shutdowns always occurred while panning or zooming around the scene. I also do hear a little gpu whine from one of the 780tis but thought it was normal.

The best is to have a dedicated video card for your display (you can get something very usable for under $100).
That way your 2 780s are just for Octane.

Otherwise, in the properties for the video cards, check on "use priority". Then hit the button on the main UI that looks like a speed ometer and set it to low.
This will allocate more of the video card to your system and less to Octane. It will slow down a little, but should get you better performance.

For the final render, switch it back to high priority

I actually do have a separate gtx 760 for my two monitors.The two 780tis are dedicated for Octane.
