trying out sss for the plastic, and the new camera and lens options with Old School Exposure and also a linear one
Getting more control, but something feels off somehow. focal length 60mm, sensor with 25mm, fstop 16
is there any way to increase the highlight compression to say, 5, ?

Try reducing highlight with Camera Raw filter in photoshop. Play with Exposure, highlights and shadows there.
In Octane you can also balance your lighting and materials colours (don't use pure white).

playing with f-stop in octane and gamma+exp in PS does seem to do the trick
eyeballing till you get it right also works ;)
