Guys,

I fell in love with Modo and after about 2-3 weeks of experience I would like to get the Octane plugin. But before I do that I have some questions. I haven't started with texturing yet in modo so please forgive if rookie questions:

1. Will I be able to transform textures (images) on replicas independently, randomly, color them. Does Octane plugin support it? Does it matter for Octane if I use replicas or instances?

2. Does the level of render subdivisions affect the vram? Are there any recommendations in this matter?

3. Are there any important limitations of Octane plugin compared to the built-in render engine in Modo?

Hope to get my hands into the plugin soon.

PS. I am trying to intersect a square and a circle and make a union of them. In Sketchup it takes 1-2 seconds. Could you please help of how to do it in modo ? ;)

Hi
1. Will I be able to transform textures (images) on replicas independently, randomly, color them. Does Octane plugin support it? Does it matter for Octane if I use replicas or instances?
Not sure what you mean by "replica". You can use the Octane random color node as you do in Standalone - and a Modo Replicator will convert (automatically) to an Octane scatter. In general, the plugin support Modo Replicators very well, so what you see in the Modo viewport to will get in the Octane viewport.
2. Does the level of render subdivisions affect the vram? Are there any recommendations in this matter?
You can either subd in Modo and load into the plugin, or get the plugin to do the subd'ing. Pls see http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Modo/?page_id=977. In general, geometry doesn't have a huge impact on VRAM use.
3. Are there any important limitations of Octane plugin compared to the built-in render engine in Modo?
The manual contains the current limitations. http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Modo/?page_id=185

The current demo version of the plugin is reasonably up to date, so will give you a good idea of the functionality.

Paul,

Thanks for quick reply. Some time ago Marcus helped me in writing LUA script for random transforms of image textures over instances
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=41388

Is this effect also achievable in Modo? Shortly speaking I'd like to make my instances look different.

I'm not quite sure what part of that thread you are looking to implement in the Modo plugin - the negative UV scaling is supported, LUA scripting is not currently supported, gradient nodes are in, but not fully supported (but wouldn't be too much work to finish off - there just hasn't been a user requiring the gradient node yet). You can export the scene from the Modo plugin and load into Standalone if you need to run an LUA script (but it sounds like from that thread the LUA scripting does not currently do what you need).

Paul,

I'll do more reading/tutorials, play with the demo and ask more questions then.

Thank you for your time.

Can someone help me with resetting the octane render setup control panel layout? I am fighting with it for an hour.

I uninstalled the octane plugin, cleared files - no success. I still have no clue how to revert to the default layout.

Thanks Paul. That is what I did (2 hours of despair  ).

Just a small suggestion - is it possible to add extra option to reset the layout settings to default?
