I am trying to use instances in Maya.
I use the duplicate special option and create instance.
My file size stays small but when I render depending on how many instances I have.... it eventually stops rendering.
Does the instance get converted to polys at render time?
Is there an Octane setting that I am missing that recognizes the instances?
I notice when I save out a packaged scene its size increases the more instances I have which makes me think that the packaged scene does not recognize instances.... which makes me think that they are nor recognized at render time in maya either.
Any clarification appreciated.

I did a huge forest with instances (maya copy instances). It was very hard to render at the begining, but then I did get all the instance copies to be "a movable proxy", or better if they don't move set it at "scatter".
The scene translation and the memory occupation should be much smaller.
