I have an EVGA 780 GTX with 6gb of RAM an I'm looking forward to buy a 980 gtx with 4 gb of RAM and use both cards.
As far as I know the 980 is not working at maximum performance with octane. Is that right? Should I buy a 780 instead?
I need to decide very quick. Please help. (I know about the limitations of the RAM to 4gb with 980, but that's ok).
Thank you!
What video card should I buy?

780 (6gb) or if You have enough funds head for TitanZ with discount. Don't take 980 if You need to work now =) Maxwell architecture based cards don't work at their best & the question when they will..
So if You have 6GB card already, look for discontinued 780 (6GB), TitanBlack (as it has 6GB) or TitanZ as it has 2x 6GB - just keep in mind that 780 will be equipped with non reference cooler, TitanB with reference cooler & TitanZ is three slot card opposed to other two that need only two slots =)
if You wish, drop me a line, I know Guys who are selling their used TitanBlacks =) for reasonable price.
