Is it any faster rendering gtx 980 and the gtx 780ti?

I think that with the current Octane version, the 780ti is going to be faster than the 980.

780ti vs gtx980 is contemplating a purchase.

If you buy now at this point ??

I don't know the final performance of the future releases of Octane over the GTX 980 / Maxwell GPUs. The Otoy team is working on it.

If you need the GPU now to render your projects with the current Octane version, it is safer to buy a GTX 780ti or Titans, as far I know.

for now Kepler based, gk110 cards (780{Tis}/Titans{Blacks}) are the best choose if You're looking for performance. Which onto choose depends on how much You want to spend & how much vRAM You need - the rest is simple =)
