Octane doesn't really have the tools for scene compositing (arranging multiple objects). Would be great if it did but for now we'll just have to use plugins with software that can. Two of the currently supported 3D packages are free: Blender and SketchUp.

well, i was referring to materials right now. I have been having major problems using material macros and have found that saving each one to disk seems to fix it but saving each one over and over when I make changes is a pain in the ass.

Yes, there is still much to do regarding material library managment... Ctrl+click for multiple node imports... Importing node as linked, so that when you edit it, the changes are reflected in all scenes with this node (or importing it as a duplicate, if you want to work with a local copy)... Saving nodes without the need to embed image files, just link them...
