Hi all,

I'm planning adding support for a 2nd import format.
This does'nt have anything to do with RIB.

Octane will be a fully RiSpec / RenderMan RIB Compliant renderer,
but i'd like to have a 2nd option that includes animation and camera support (eg stuff that OBJ does'nt practically support),
so i'm going to add either Autodesk FBX (seems to be my choice at the moment) or Collada.

This is because not all 3d packages offer RIB exporters, quite a few do, but not all of them.

When a suitable choice is made, don't expect this to be working next week.
You'll have to give me some time to develop it, as i'm currently working on the RIB and Octane Scene file format for loading/saving octane scenes.

What do you guys think/prefer?

EDIT: poll removed due to a bug in our template that breaks polls. will fix this. Just reply to this thread with your opinion :)

Yours,

Yeah, i'll have to look into that.
Just post for now.

I'd like to add that adding support for FBX will be easier/quicker to implement,
and it will be very compatible as i can use the FBX SDK instead of manually writing a collada parser that needs to be tested against other applications collada output,
and, there seems to be lots of versioning issues with collada resulting in incompatibilities.

If FBX is easier, then go for that first.

IMO Collada, if not only because it allow sketchup to be used out of the box.

maybe people can also mention reasons and opinions why,
that can surely help pick what's going to be chosen :)

@Radiance

Can you add things like "Octane will be a fully RiSpec / RenderMan RIB Compliant renderer"
or "as Octane will be used on a few film productions during this year"

In separate topics in the News & Announcements section ?
Because not everyone specially new people read every forum post, and those good infos get lost deep in forums.
Im not concerned because I read everything carefully but im sure some people doesn't read everything ;)
That will also prevent people asking the same questions like "How do you gonna implement animation"
or "does Octane gonna support FBX"

Or do you plan adding a public dev roadmap with infos when beta gets out ?
