ORBX/ABC export disabled?

Are ORBX and Alembic export disabled in the plugin demo versions, specifically Maya? I get

Error: line 0: Could not save file "C:/Users/DSY/Desktop/export_test.abc".
whenever I try.

I'm asking because Maya crash whenever I try to export to OCS using the v1.20 student version. I'd like to see if it works before I consider upgrading to the full version. (Although, this would be less important if the plugin were v2.x.)

I have a standalone and Poser plugin license, and those export fine.
Core i7-3770 / 16GB RAM / 2x GTX 780 6GB / Windows 7
