Hi all,
finally I upgraded my Octane licenses to check if the distribute render worked
..and the answer is: YES!
You don't need any extra host licenses. In my case I use Max.
Octane for Max is an highly engineered software because I tried every gpu based renderer with networked workstations without full success.
I installed the plugin and Octane standalone and it worked like a charm at the first click.
Here you can see a render computed with a total of 12 gpus: 4 Titans + 4 GTX 680 + 4 GTX 580
Tomorrow I will replace my "old" 580s with the new Titans Black
But, today you can render with your "old" gpus and have unlimited textures....
The dark side is represented by the slow performance but we get unlimited textures, displacement, motion blur, fur, etc...This is the price to pay.
I think that Karba and friends will find new algorithms to boost up the performance
regards
IT WORKS!!!

What was the render time? Is it PMC?

PT 12 bounces
1,8 hours for each render
12 mixed gpus
I mean:
less features = fast renders
and vice-versa
The topic says: "it works"
I can confirm that 12 gpus work all together
I always asked for this feature.

Look at gabrielefx his signature... He has got his own renderfarmvoon wrote:All local or did you render across the internet with PCs of friends?

Nice, awesome job getting all those GPUs working man... But 1.8 hours per render ?? Really :S..
. I'd rather leave them cooking a lot less and use NiceImage noise remover plugin for Photoshop? Still, very awesome! And a little sad to see that 12 GPUs STILL take 1.8 hours for a still-noisy interior.

2x GTX780 3GB, 1 3930k @4.0, 3xAMD 1090T 6-core (for vray), 16GB RAM, Win7 64. + Octane (learning and hoping, lol)
I've actually though the same, Charlesp2.charlesp2 wrote: But 1.8 hours per render ?? Really..
OK, Gabriele, I do understand that it's interior,
but something could be done to remove noise
- with 12GPUs & almost 2h..
Great images.
But rendertime is scary for 12 gpu's

Octane for 3ds Max v2.21.1 | i7-5930K | 32GB | 1 x GTX Titan Z + 2 x GTX 980 Ti
Great to see the network rendering working, cheers for posting.
On the render speed, would it fair to say that the rig with 4 x 580's (which each have 512 cores) could be compared to just under 1 x Titan Black (which has 2880 cores)?
And that the rig of 4 x 680's (which each have 1536 cores) would be similar to just over 2 x Titans?
So, coupled with the 4 x Titan rig, the render power is similar to 7 Titan GPU's?
Still a chunk of render power
