I understand that when using multiple graphics cards in a single system that the number of used GB is limited to the card with the least amount of VRAM. But does this also apply to network rendering? If my main system has two cards with 6GB each but another computer running as a slave node has cards which only have 4GB then is the total allowable memory still only 4GB?

I'm going to assume that the same limitation applies. But I think the solution is still as easy. For the jobs where 4GB is enough, it won't matter. For the jobs where 4GB isn't enough, just disable network rendering on those 4GB cards, and your available VRAM goes back up to 6GB. Which is fine, because you wouldn't be able to fit that scene on those 4GB cards anyway.

Yes when worded that way it no longer seems like a "loss". Just keep the larger memory cards in the main system for any scene that can't take advantage of the slave nodes with the smaller ram cards.
