Hi there!
Would someone be so kind as to suggest why my characters' skin/lips are rendering so dark in Octane..? (see attached)
Thanks.

The most common cause I have seen for this (and any other skin texture that comes out too dark in Octane. Looks like her skin is too dark too) is that it picks up a too dark colour in the "power" of the diffuse channel. Check the lips material and see what colour is in the power entry under diffuse. If it is a darker colour, move it closer to pure white (for example up too 230/230/230). That should help.

Oh ho! Yes, the diffuse strength on Scott's lips was set at 45% in DAZ Studio while the rest of his skin was at 100%. Bryn's skin was also set low, but once I bumped it up to 100%, it looked normal in Octane.
Thanks THD777!

Thanks linvanchene. Unchecking the RGB box is a great idea. Evens the 'skin settings' playing field.
It's always been a bit of a pain that different skin textures/settings react in different ways to different lighting within DAZ - because the PAs make them to different specs.

Unfortunately, this morning I can't seem to open the file I was working on. Keeps crashing DAZ...

When does in crash? During loading in DS or when it is trying to pass info to Octane (you can see the octane symbol in the button row turn read from left to right during that process)? If it happen s during the latter process, you can try to set Octane to manual load (the button with Octane symbol that normally has Auto on it) and see if the scene loads then.
From your other post it seems that you have only 2Gb of ram and that the card is also used for your display? If so, you probably have only 1.5 or so Gb available to Octane and it might run into space problems that cause the crash. I had that happen a couple of times before I added a new GPU card for rendering only.

Thanks for responding re: the crashing, TD. I contacted T_3 via pm and we figured out all I needed to do was check the 'strip all plugin data' under preferences. That fixed it.
My motherboard doesn't support two video cards, unfortunately. I'm thinking about upgrading to a GTX Titan...not sure how much that will help, though.

Hey Mellisa. Here some easy basic material settings for skin to start with:
Skin:
Set material to glossy.
Keep Specular at 1
Set Roughness power to about 0.30
Set Bumb power to about 0.125
Lips, inner mouth, gums, teeth, tongue, nails, sclera:
Same as above but keep the Roughness low. Like under .1
Eyes:
As above, but with minimal roughness and minimal or no bump. Index: 1.5. You can try setting the cornea to specular (turn opactity on in both DS and Octane!) with again a low Roughness and index 1.5.
This will give you a good starting point for most skins. Next tweak as you will.

Perfect! Your advice works for arranging the skin, now, what can I do to fix the eyes?thd777 wrote:The most common cause I have seen for this (and any other skin texture that comes out too dark in Octane.
