Very simply....

Does Octane work with HD Instance? (asking because HD Instance has some features which LW's native instancing doesn't)

I know that dp Instance doesn't work, but there's no demo for HD instance to try it out myself :-/

I suspect that it won't work (due to it being Volumetric based) but thought I'd ask.

Nope, sorry. Octane only supports the native Lightwave instancing system. HD Instance doesn't have an API to support external render engines.
