Hi, I don't know if anyone will find this interesting or not, but it's a visual representation of Octane checking your internet connection periodically. The program is called Net Meter, which monitors downloads and uploads from your computer. I use it so I always know what my internet is doing.
On the graph, the red is downloads and the yellow is uploads. It peaks at about 3.0KiB/s for downloads and 2.0KiB/s for uploads per ping.
Octane pinging every 5-10 seconds.

yes,
we ping to be able to show the 'connected/disconnected' message so users know when you're playing in 2.3 and you've lost your connection, so you cna continue to work without access to livedb and changing the preferences panel.
rest assured we have the infrastructure to handle the pings and we are not interested or reading/sending/collecting in your private information or statistics/usage patterns, stuff like that will only come back to haunt us later.
