I am sorry for starting this again but it's really frustrating so hopefully somebody would be kind enough to explain to me why on earth is this happening.

P.S. Please, do not make go check the manual and the rest of the linear workflow articles. I did, which means there is something I dont understand or it's was poorly explained in the first place. Anyone willing to take the extra effort and explain the current issue - I will buy you a beer! :)

Just to sum up:

"TONEMAPPED" means a 32bit/float image with values clamped between 0 and 1. Correct?

What I ultimately want Octane to do is - render a TONEMAPPED 32 bit image (which is always in linear color space) which shows correctly in After Effects - YES, I've linearized the working space there as well cause I want all my post processing done in linear as well.

The camera imager "Response" has NOT been changed, it's left to its default.

IF instaed of "TONEMAPPED" I select "UNTONEMAPPED" everything works as expected. So.. WHY is tonemapped giving me brighter image both in the picture viewer and when imported in a linearized after effects composition.

I need consistency in the way images look in octane's live viewer, the picture viewer and after effects.

Hopefully this was thorough enough.

Thanks!

A bit of a long shot given it has been 5 years since you posted this but did you manage to find a solution?

What are looking for in reality? This is very old topic and actual manual has some proper explanation for the topic. It's first place to look for your questions.

Hi Ahmet,

I've been scanning the forums trying to understand how I can get the best results when using tonemapping. To be specific I'm only using Highlight compression, everything else in the imager tag is untouched. If I could do highlight compression in composting I would but I cannot find a good tonemapper plugin/filter for after effects. Fusion and nuke have good tonemappers/highlight compression but Nuke is out of my price range for my needs and Fusion is now integrated with Resolve and the workflow has changed a lot and I don't like it. So with this in mind I have no choice other than to use the Octane highlight compression.

The issue I am having is that my passes come out with double gamma when I select tonemapped as my output option in the render globals. This would not be a major issue usually, I understand that when you use tonemapping you give up any hope of your passes adding up to the same result as the beauty.....I am happy to work straight off the beauty pass in comp in exchange for a nicely tonemapped result. The problem with this though is that the beauty will render correctly but all passes are wrong in terms of gamma...even the denoised result which I am wanting to use as my beauty. The only way to get the passes to come out the same as the beauty is to either turn off tonemapped output which looses my highlight compression (which I need and cannot get as good of a result in comp) or render to png and then everything works just fine. I can apply inverse gamma in AE but the result comes out slightly darker than the original beauty.

Why don't I render to PNGs you ask? because I need Cryptomatte. I tried setting up two render takes to work around this....one take for png tonemapped output and one optimised black render take with no lights just to capture the cryptomatte pass. The main problem with this is that cyrptomatte still needs to sample my motion blur/volumes/antialiasing so it basically works out similar to rendering the whole shot again in terms of render time.

What I want is the ability to apply highlight compression to my render but not create a situation where my passes output with the wrong gamma when rendering to an exr. This may just be user error on my part but I tried many combinations and read the manual in detail and still cannot get the result I am looking for.

If you look at V-Ray for instance.....you can apply exponential highlight compression to a render but still render a beauty and all passes in 32 container without any issues even if you are getting a clamped result.
