This has most certainly been answered somewhere in the forums, I did my best to look for it here by searching "power" in all topics and skimmed thru all posts, also did the same in the manual... so...

The Power-value in the ImageTexture node is set at 0.9 by default, are there any reason for this? My guts tells me to crank it up to 1 every time for some reason.

Yes, that has bothered me since the beginning. I'ts like in Maya, where the diffuse intensity is 0.8 by default... WHY??? WHY???? :?

I'm not sure, but I think the original reasoning was that a path tracer really doesn't 100% reflective surfaces. But we have set the default to 1.0 in version 1.21.

I remember a conversation about this but the search function in phpbb is so bad I can't find it. I think you are right that it was set that way because in reality no surface would reflect 100% of the light hitting it. And as Radiance posted in another thread, if you went above 1 the surface would start to emit light. :) I also remember something that if you push the values to 1 it would slow the render down a bit, but I'm probably miss-remembering it.
