Err....Large subject.Depends what you want to do with it.Quality wise i have always gone with Gigabyte boards in the past.They have never let me down.They always use quality components.MSI and ASUS are other good makes.Then we come to what features you will require.for your graphics cards,Hard drives etc.Regarding using Octane.You will need a PCIE x16 V2 slot at least.You can get away with an x8 slot as well.Sata 2 ports are needed for the current Hard Drives.Sata 3 ports would be prefered if you are going to go for SSD.Then of course it depends on which processor you are going to use.AMD or Intel.Not massively critical when rendering up 3D as most of the processing will be done on the Nvidia graphics cards.And that is just the tip of the iceburg.
