Hi, I thought I would outline some of the changes that are coming in the next release.

Firstly, the material system is changing so that an Octane material is just another type of Rhino material. When you render in Octane, both Octane and non-Octane materials will render in the viewport - the Octane ones you will be able to edit the Octane node structure (as you can currently). So the Materials tab will be removed, and Octane material editing will happen in the Rhino Material panel. This change means your current Octane materials will be lost for existing scene, since the new and current systems are totally different from each other.

There are a range of follow-on changes from the above change. For example, the ground plane material will now render correctly in Octane.

The other exciting change is support for Edge Softening, Curve Piping and Displacement. The geometry generated from all the features in Rhino will now be rendering in Octane. The image below shows the Viewport for both Rhino and Octane with these effects (and you can see how the new material system has rendered each material correctly in both viewports too).

There are a host of other minor fixes (alpha channel support in the Rhino render panel, etc) which will be made to the next release too.

Closer integration of the Rhino block instances is definitely something that will happen - probably the release after the material integration release.

This is terrific news! The material system overhaul will greatly increase efficiency and be less confusing to new users as well. Paul, you rock!
