Hi,

What's the best way to materialize a model of a typical sharpened pencil. Materials would include a glossy outside paint material, wood, and the graphite tip. The pencil tip could be separate model but achieving the subtle blend between the paint and wood. For example how layers of paint are removed by a sharpener/knife on top of the wood is what I’m after. Is there something in Octane that can help achieve this?

thanks

your best bet to to export your UVs for the pencil from your 3D modeling application and then Photoshop together a pencil.

If this is far away, you can just create an alpha map from your UVs, where the yellow part is white and the wood black. Then plug this into the mix amount of a mix node. Have one material be the yellow, and the other the wood. If you soften or even use a grunge brush to blend the white to black transition in the alpha map (in Photoshop), you can get a realistic result.

Ok that's a good idea. I may even simply render the entire pencil in gloss paint, wood, and graphite and blend the images together and revel what I need.

Thanks

Using an alpha image for "Mixed Material" worked for me fine, in similar case.
