Not a good time for some of us on ealth side...

Well, I wanted to share a scary experience, that can happen to anyone using a computer :

Today, as I encountered a problem with Blender to Octane exporter, I wanted to make some trial with my previous 32 bits system that I have kept on a hard disk (I have several drawers witths different systems).

I shut off the computer, put of the Win7x64 hard disk drawer and insert the disk with XP32.

Then, I switch on the beast again, and ... nothing except the bios and a black screen with the cursor. No error message.

I can access to the bios, but nothing more. In the bios setup, everything seems OK.

I change the drawer for a the Win7x64 again... pitch black screen... again.

I unscrew the drawer support and insert a new one (I have several new in spare), reboot... black !

I try several disks with no more success, and after that I have a scary thought : if there was a power supply problem I could have killed all my disks, with systems and data ! :o

Power supply measured : OK on all rails...

I phone to one of my computer parts provider... if it is the SATA controller, it means changing the motherboard... the P5K is rather old and if I have to change the mother board, It can require
10 days to get one and change it if I can find it that fit in my case !... as I have just ordered two GTX 480 and I am short money, it is a nightmare !

Scary !

I look again into the bios setup, the only way by what my PC still look still a bit alive, with few hope...

Suddenly, I see that in the boot parameters, the name of my hard disk is ASUS, like the motherbard ! Hey, my hard disk is an Hitachi ! I dive a bit more in the boot sequence parameters and find that the order of the boot sequence has also changed and the ASUS disk is declared as an IDE, while I have a SATA.

I change the parameters and reboot, and the PC comes to life !

At this moment I remember that I had never change the BIOS lithium cell !

I have changed it , checked all parameters (maybe I have missed some, but everything looks fine) and booted again, and the situation has came back to normal. :)

If someone has idea of an important parameter to look at the suggestion will be welcome, but at first sight, everything works fine.

It is the proof that small things can have big effects ! A simple 3V cell at 3 Euros has ruined half a day of my life !

At least the story has a happy end !

So, it your computer pretends to be dead, maybe that it only wants some more care and a small lithium cell ! ;)
