Hello,
I received very large models, lots of polygons, from a customer, mainly structures.

Maya has been crashing a lot even with only 25% of the structures in the same scene,
I don't know what it is.

In any case, what's the best way to deal with large objects made out of repetitive objects?
For example there are hundreds of stair steps.

Is it better to use instancing for the stairs and anything that is repeated many times?

Can render proxies be used? (Something like Mental Ray Render Proxies)

What's best?
The goal is to navigate in the viewport without problems and to make the scene more stable.
I am not as concern for the loading, voxelization times.
I am more worried about having a more stable reliable scene

Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Snoopy

PS: I use GTX Titans

Hi,
A few weeks ago i had a scene overlooking an army with about 10 000 soldiers. Giving me a scene of about 200-250 million polygons.
What i did was to instance everything i could but even to navigate the scene would be slow so i also had to set the object to only show a cube instead this gave me some freedome to move around in the scene. Another thing that you might be able to do is to group objects and then set the display of the whole group as a cube.

I hope this gives you some help

ok, I will try that!

How do you set it up to show as a cube?
Layers: Selected Layer -> Bounding Box
or
Maya Scene Assembly?

I was a little worried that I couldn't handle that many polygons.

Thanks a lot kayze!!!

Yes bounding box,
Wasn't infront of maya and i forgot the name of it :)
But you don't have to use layers to set bounding box, you can also go into the attribute editor with the mesh selected and go to the disply tab and set it there
