regarding the diffuse map type: you should change the diffuse setting in the preferences tab from "auto type" to "image", this will avoid the use of the floatimage type for this channel.
remove unused keeps maps as long as octane OR studio have them listed somewhere;
- for octane this means, unlinked materials still need the maps until you delete them (btw, to delete all those at once, you can right-click the "unlinked" node in the tree and choose "delete all unlinked materials")
- for studio i don't know when they get released; if you load 3 sets, you will notice, that studio itself keeps the older maps also in its own list, and as long as they are there, they won't get removed from the octane maps list also (since the plugin menu always returns all maps that studio is aware of). imo the maps list in studio also wipes out unused maps at some point, but apparently not right away.
if you test that for maps that were directly loaded with "browse" in the plugin's image menu, i.e. or for maps used by live-db materials, you should see them removed as soon the nodes/materials are deleted from the scene...
