Hi there.
As im on a slow hardware (maybe a lot other people, too) it would be interesting to generate caustics with direct lightening kernel.
I know that this is possible in Yafaray-Renderer, with very good quality (sharp caustics) using a spotlight.
So, if this would be possible inside of octane to have caustics using direct lightening it would be a very good thing!

Take a look to yafaray-renderer.
You can use direct lightening and let it generate caustics (using a photon map).
A big +1 for very fast rendering WITH caustics!
