Well, I'm having fun playing with pre-2.3, I didn't have many simple models to test with, so my first test were with and old model I did when we design a wardrobe for our room and this is the model I did to send along with the plans to the carpenter. He did a nice job btw.
Well, both images were rendered in the 2.3, day and night, the frame drop with the interior lights was amazing but still pretty fast, and I know it's riddled with fireflies, but I wanted to shared. Meanwhile I'll leave octane rendering for the night some more test, this with my friends museum interior model with the planned interior lighting, it's a though one 'cause it's all indirect lighting, but it looks good for now.

looks great, the one with exterior lights seems more sharp.
how did you manage to put an interior light in the scene?

Yeap, the night one needs more cooking plus probably I should have used the resizing technique, but I wanted a quick test.
To add a light you use the pre 2.3 release add a diffuse material and in the emmision channel change null to blackbody.
Here is another test, this time with this model http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... ect#p17760. The light comes from downlights hidden inside the ceiling and fluorescent tubes hidden inside the wall on the top and bottom of the side panels to flood the inside white panels to produce an indirect light without glares or reflection in the paintings that would be placed on the walls.
The image was rendered at double its size, 2 shots with different rrprob, despeckled and mixed in phothosop and downsized. Each render was cooked to 600 samples for about 2 hr (batch rendered while I was sleeping, so I really don't know the exact time). There is some fireflies, but IMHO it looks good, so I'm anxious to see what we can achieve with MLT.

I really like the wardrobe design, to the level I think I might make one like it for myself! ;)

For the second render, yes it looks like it will be good (emitters), but right now, I dont see it usable at all, and I dont think Octane's developers said that the final 2.3 will have MLT, did they? All I recall from another thread that Radiance said something about having a new way to eliminate fireflys (not MLT), because as he said MLT was not implemented before in GPU calculations.
I dont know if what they are going to come up with is better than MLT. Supersampling is just like rendering 2x, 4x...etc, it doesnt solve the problem and it takes alot of the GPU RAM. Emitters without a WORKING fireflys elimination solution are useless.

By the way, in the second render, did you use any sunlight/HDRI beside emitters?

Hey,

We are working on a firefly/caustic capable and efficient rendering algorithm, it's not strictly MLT but a heavily modified version of it.
Trust me, this is the last big feature we need to implement to have a capable renderer, so it's our highest priority feature to finish.
The final beta 2.3 will have it.

This is good news to hear.... I guess we can expect final 2.3 after months.. till that I hope, there will be more RC to play with...

Well, for this test I had all ready, when I modeled it for the contest I thought of the future night render so the materials were ready and the lamps were in place, and here it is, at least the first try, I think it still needs some tweaking, but it's pretty close to what I thought.
3 shots with different rrprob, deflyed, and resized. 1000 samples, a little over an hour each.
Hope you guys like it.

Okay, good news. Will it really take months or we should expecting it sooner? :)

I love it, also i have an idea, the lights as it is, is very bright and not natural. Why dont you make the light sources transparency 0, and over it put a duplicate that does not emit light and fake its look with materials/texture/post to make it look like they are the emitters. What do you think?

thanks Hmk, yeap, I like the idea, I'll give it a go over the weekend (I should do some work besides having fun, but it's so hard, nice weather, new octane...) also, I do need to set different materials for the inside perimetral light fixtures and the outside ones, cause it's too bright inside and scarce outside.
