Yo, this is possible, search forum for "Shadow Catcher" material.

This is a new feature since 1.12, i am not sure if it is reachable from the 3dmax plugin.
Maybe a max user can help here.

Cheers, mib.

as far as I am aware, you cannot use jpg as the background and HDRI as the environment, you can do the shadow catcher with a hdri (that's the new feature) - and you can then add the background in photoshop
- I think there's actually a bunch of features that could be doable inside 3dmax - since this is just compositing, adding an alpha image on top of a .jpg - maybe octane should release some development kit for max - there's probably a way to do it inside max without using octane core - there are scripts/plugins that can manipulate the render window/frame buffer like this one http://www.monotoneminimal.com/vfb , so it's basically convenient postprocessing inside max, maybe there are more photoshop like plugins for 3dmax

Hi acc24ex, it is possible to use HDRI + Shadowcatcher + Background image and you get reflections from the HDRI but you have much better control if you do it in PS or Gimp.
Matte and background image make not really sense for me.
