As you can see I've got this 3d candle and the original is not smooth as a lowpoly.
I tried to improve it in Sketchup (that did not work yet), but I was wondering if
a 3d-object not being smooth can be enhanced in Octane by material setting or otherwise?
greetz,
enhance smoothness in Octane?

Tell me, did you create that model in archicad ?
If you did, then archicad is to blame.
every free form is reduced in number of polygons so that archicad can work faster. Its the limitation of GDL. If archicad tryed to draw perfect free form (circle, ellipse etc) it would be impossible for archicad.
So, you must be sure to use greater number in segments alonge circles and curves before you export your model.
Your model of canndle is n-sided polygon (you could easily add different material on every face of your canndle) not circle, or tube. So its impossible for octane to make it smooth....
Yu can fix this in blender
I suggest you to use blender as bridge between archciad and octane
i hope this helps

I got this free model from 3dwarehouse, so I don't know the original modeller (i expect Sketchup),face wrote:Then your usernormals are wrong...

I tried to get it more smooth in Sketchup and I tried to see if there was something for me to do about usernormals in Sketchup, but I did not realy succeed. I got the smoothness a little bit better by adding a different material in Sketchup and smoothen the model (i think the smoothen is only shown graphically, but did not really enhance the model),
But i did not get rid of the strong edges.
Lesson learned: don't start with a 3dmodel without cheking the quality.
Necko77, thnx.. It is good to know blender might solve the smoothness problem fromout archicad..
I hope i can solve it with c4d soon.. I made this choice before I met Octane and Blender

I work with archicad, and yes it is difficult to get smooth edges with some types of objects,
Some are easy to adjust by enlarge reoslution, but some objects are sadly not to adjust.
But I also have c4d, so i should be able to make complexed shapes without any problem... If only I had time to learn c4d

Is there a way to open a Sketchup model in c4d and make it smooth with hitting 1 or 2 buttons and export it to obj?
That would be nice. As you can see I am still searching for the different workflows, but it all fun to do and I am glad at this point I can do some projects for clients in OR already while still laerning

I have found that sometimes when I bring in meshes I download from online, the vertices arnt welded together, which stops any kind of smoothing because the faces arnt actually connected.
Maybe check that, otherwise, it looks like smoothing is turned off in your material.

Intel quad core i5 @ 4.0 ghz | 8 gigs of Ram | Geforce GTX 470 - 1.25 gigs of Ram
If you select the mesh node, next to the filename there is a load button, a reload button and a settings button. Click the settings button and check if "use OBJ vertex normals if supplied" is enabled. It may be switched off, in that case Octane won't load any vertex normals. If it is enabled, try disabling it. If this makes the mesh smooth then the exported vertex normals are wrong.
