Today i see that Arion2 is out, they lowered the price from 695 to 195 euros... great... but...
fryrender is gone, be cause integrated in arion 2
XSI and Max Live support great, but no more other...
They abandoned EVERY other packages...
that mean the past plugins connection for lightwave, maya, cinema4d, blender, rhino etc are gone and not longer supported...
You can, if you want, buy a stand alone package that load obj file and you must do all inner package.
Please Otoy, don't follow that way please...
With Octane you can reach more audience that leave arion for lacked support of their packages like maya, cinema4d, lightwave etc...
Please don't follow the random control Example...
I saw that - almost pissed myself
I think fryrenders output plugin should still work for Arion - and it should still work for all those other packages - only they've switched to Arion 100%. The fryexport plugin was used to export to arion before - they are probably only going to rename it. It is possible they have fails in sales and focusing on only one product - it is a logical move, less resources spent on a product that does not earn enough income - a problem with all bigger companies that earned a lot before - and they kept on spending like before - I'm just guessing here, but if you look around that is what's happening all around the world, new strategies to overcome crysis - in other cases Apple keeps on earning more and more and more.. (2 milion preorders of iphone5), their niche product earned more money than their main products (laptops, desktops..)
- still octane released a few octaneLive renders if you check - it's probably because there are more users from a particular 3d app they use - so if there is a larger user base that wants octane they will offer more support - help spread the word, it's a matter of selling licences vs user support here, you cannot hire a guy or a team to work on a particular plugin - they will not work for free - or if someone works for free they tend to not have enough time to do it like a team of people working on it 8 to 24 hours a day - a higly motivated and enthusiastic team can get incredible results (money tends to be the first obstacle, then come social relations which leads to a highly motivated teamwork, or something o_o)
- also, Octane: add that stuff that works on arion (still the basics) and promote it ferociously
- it will come back in number of users and better support to us
- the fact octane costs 100 euro is a claim to all other software companies that it doesn't have to be that expensive and .. the note should go out to all! software companies that the best way to fight piracy is to lower their prices - in the end it means that people will actually start to but software - and not hunt for pirated versions - it's the same attitude iphone has with their apps - if you sell 2 million 1$ apps - how many moneyz do you get - look at angry birds - it is beyond redicolous (especially since it was based on an older flash game, that was either open source or they bought the claims - or didnt)
- or take a look at kickstarter.com projects - here's an idea - you can post a project on kickstarer.com and get the funding to hire a team and start a project
- you can start a project there where you want to make a plugin for octane users - you calculate how much money you want to pleadge and present it it to people who would want to buy it - if the project doesnt reach the required amount, the money is sent back to the people who "backed" a project
just check this example for a game http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/123 ... f=category
they needed 13 thousand $ to make a game - ended up with 42 thousand $ - people will back up a project if they want it or just support it - in turn you get the game when it is released or a thank you note, you can choose.. just need to present it properly to relevant people - if it succeeds I believe it would be a win-win situation, octane could get more users and users get more support - that is - if someone is willing to pay for added support - actualy octane could do that as a testing ground, you still have to buy the additional octanelive plugin, which is as much as the standalone - I know I would back that up

I understand their point of view, i understand crisys, but...
- if today i abandoned customers that in last years invest their money on me, it's difficult that they talk well about me, and i lose faith of users... i never will buy a software from a software house that abandoned me in new release.
- obj support is bad way to support new structure...
we are in 2012, there are many full scenes, objs, animation format to read and support in one time most of application...
i talk about FBX, Collada and more ... many application like cinema4d, lightwave3d, max, maya, xsi exchange full scenes, with animation, point animation and more between these format... especially between FBX.
if they (otoy read this please) support FBX with simple point animation, that add to stand alone support of most of animations needings, without spent too much times along plugins.
Octane have in developing cicle the RIB (pixar renderman structure) is very nice structure format, but few supported from 3d application, FBX is a young, powerful and more supported structure. All main software support directly this format to exchange scene.
Anyway... my problem with software is that i must suggest it under windows and under mac, today i know that arion is windows only tool (live plugin and stand alone), than i hope that if Otoy decide to reduce effort along application support, keep their energy along Windows and Mac platform, and import of more complex structure like FBX that allow me to render out animation from octane. Most of us non t need to animate in Octane, but render out animation in octane, that mean we need only a support of keyframe for inner parameter of octane, and point animation reading from MDD or PointCache Autodesk to have all kind of animation in scene.
