Hello

Trying to get a model from Revit to Octane without success.
Revit exports in: DWG, DXF, DWF 3D, IFC, FBX, SAT, DGN

1. Export in FBX and convert to OBJ with Autodesk FBX converter. The result was the model is imported with Z axis changed. Not usable.
2. Export in DXF, convert to FBX, convert to OBJ. Hangs with larger models (100 Mb).

Any suggestions are welcome.

Please keep in mind Revit models tend to be very large (150 mb or more)

Thanks

Well, even though I rarely use Revit now.. I was sucesful in exporting as FBX to Max, then export as obj from there.
I also think...you can chage the z-axis in Octane import or not... ?

Hi
Thanks for the quick reply.
Max might be a solution but we don't have it.
Regarding changing the axis in import, I thinks that is not possible.

my pipeline setup from revit to octane is:

- export from revit as dwg with solid geometry (not polymesh)
- import in max via filelinker. so you can update the geometry without loosing your texturing work etc. in max
- export obj from max
- import in octane and tweak the things.

after changes happens in revit do the pipeline again and reimport the obj in octane, to preserve your tweakings in octane.

that would be identical nearly to my pipeline from autocad to octane using 3ds max, linking a DWG.
works perfectly, and you and use thee octane to max plugin.

Thank you for all the feedback.

Still my problem is if you don't have MAX. Can Blender do the same?
I have no experience with Blender and I don´t really need a modeling program since we do all the stuff in Revit so I'm looking for an inexpensive solution to convert the file to OBJ.

Are there any future plans to develop a plugin for Revit? Does anyone know a 3rd party converter?

you could have a look at conversion programs, some might be available. (use google).
blender can't read DWG so ii don't think so. maybe try and have a look at 'polytrans'.

basicly you have two routes to get your geometry out of revit:

- fbx (=encapsulated obj) which carries also some basic uv stuff out of revit

- dwg (special format which translates materials into max)

if you don't have max, the dwg route would be much more work to apply all mats in a 3rd app.

if the swapped y-z axis is the only problem you have, i would give accutrans3d a chance to flip it. (fbx -> obj -> accutrans -> obj -> octane)

also have a look at meshlab. it does several operations (including axis swapping) on obj files as well

Thank you all for the great feedback.

I'll have a go with meshlab and post results.
Regarding sketchup, we also tried it with dwg import but it gets stuck with the model size.

Other option worth exploring is importing from DWF 3D. We can get a 150Mb model in revit to just 2.3Mb in DWF 3D. Any thoughts on that?
