I have great doubt about the Octane and his future.

I wanted to take a course minha.Se I have a 1gb card and a Gtx560ti Gtx590 with 1.5 gb and I have a scene with 2 gb or more, the Octane will not work? because when I load a scene with a little over 1 GB, the card does not render Gtx560ti, only Gtx590, wanted to take this course, and will in the near future after this alliance with the company OTOY, the Octane can take advantage of all memory graphics cards installed, I'm sure it's not impossible.

Even if it's possible, it would probably make render times longer (though i cannot say for sure, just assume) as information should be reached through slower conections..pci instead of inner ones inside GPU card. For some this might be a good deal..not to have shared memory.. Personally I'd rather have fastest render engine, instead of very capable one (there are very capable CPU renders already =)

1 or 1,5 gb cards are low or mid end products (you don't say CPU renders are too slow when all You have is low end dual core, do You?)..3gb of vRam gtx580 doesn't cost too much in these days, pluss if You mind to have bit slower card You can get 680 with 4gb(it will have lower temps, consume less energy too). If You need even more space there are 6gb teslas or quadros, that would run at lower temperatures and less noise. You'll get other things as a pluss if You work profesionally..

GPU rendering in these days requires a bit of optimisation for Your models, textures - workflows, etc. but i believe with time it will get better and better, pluss we'll see new hardware to come too.

In the end I see Octane as good enought tool for certain jobs and very bright future indeed. There is no need to worry about software itself, but more about Your own skills, knowledge.

You can learn a lot from game artists- they used to optime their models a lot.. =) even cpu's renderer scene suffered the same problems (10 years ago =)..
