Rendering with multiple machines

I wanted ask if anyone is doing that? I have read that some guys are trying to use backburner (with max plugin).
But that's not so much info about that (read this forum inside out, but maybe i missed something, if so, please post a link to a particular thread =)

Any input would be very interesting for me. If You do, how? What are the issues, etc.
Running octane standalone, but if needed i can switch to max plugin =) no problem..

i'm looking to upgrade my machine and thinking wheather to buy new small one or go to build a monstrous rig - the ability to render remotly or with several computeres is one of the factors to be counted =)

Expanders are an option too. Anyone has those?..
