Do any of the demo videos cover the proper steps for preparing a scene to import into Octane as a single obj file , and how to assign multiple surfaces to it ?

this is entirely up to how you export in your host application.
if you're host application can export materials with the OBJ as an MTL file,
octane will read them and assign them.
