Hi,

Complete novice here (with Octane at least).

I'm having problems picking material zones on my objects with the colour picker to change the materials properties.

I'm viewing the video 'Octane Interface' and following that, but Octane sees/changes everything as one material on imported obj's or not at all.

The default object that appears if you just place a diffuse node etc., will only allow me to work on the outer part of the sphere (the default material no doubt) and the BG is un-selectable as well.

Is my mouse supported.

Cheers
Chris

Hi Radiance,

Thanks for the quick reply.

The first scene (pic 1) is the default material and lighting scene

1. I select the colour pick
2. I select this surface or not and change from default colour
3. I select this surface (nothing changes in the colour pallette)
4. the colour selector doesn't change

This fruit bowl scene is from 3dR3nder.com lighting callenge here, http://www.3drender.com/challenges/fruitbowl/index.htm

As you can see, it's been rendered in just about every 3D software known to man, so I know the object has material zones and is importable to various packages.

Pic 2
I load a mesh and without selecting anything I change the colour to an orange colour, it alters the overall colour of the lighting, I suppose that's the way the software works.

Pic 3
I select the pear with the colour picker (No. 1 of pic 1) change its colour and it just alters the lighting colour, like the mouse isn't being recognised.

Hope this is clear
Chris

Actually, it seems that your whole scene uses only one single material - the light color stays the same.
In my experience - using Rhinoceros, though - this can happen when names are truncated. E.g. if you have "Basic Material 01" and "Basic Material 02" every object in the scene will have the first material with the name "Basic".

If there is a function separating and merging mesh objects in Octane, it would be very nice, I think.

Hi,

You need to see if there is an MTL file exported together with the OBJ file.
this file contains the different materials.

It's likely an export problem.
please post a shot of your export panel configuration in your host app...

Hi Trias,

I know the truncation problem and that would be a problem, but that does'nt explain the object in pic 1 that comes with Octane and why I can't select the different material zones on that.

And I find it hard to believe MAX, MAYA, Lightwave, C4D etc. etc. all recognise the mat zones and not Octane.

Thanks for you help

Hi,

Yes there is a MTL file with the OBJ, but this is only one of many objects I've tried and like I said to Trias, it doesn't explain why the object in pic 1 that Octane defaults too has the same problem.

I didn't create the bowl of fruit, it's put on the web by the hosts of CG Society as a bit of fun trying to light a scene.

Edit: look here to see what I mean

Many thanks

there must be a problem then, octane will read the MTL file and create separate materials.
can you post the OBJ+MTL file zipped here, so i can have a look ?
