Just a suggestion, with heavy scene octane gets less and less "realtime" so it is difficult to navigate and choose a viewpoint for a render

Would it be possible to have a wireframe/shaded mode to make such a task easier and then turn on pathtracing when needed ?

Have you tried to navigate with subsample activated, I mean using the buttons on the tools bar symbolising the resolution. I used them with a huge scene and the navigation is really smooth and convinient. But you may have already used them ...

have you seen arion videos from random control ?

it has several render type views, the zdepth one seems very fast to calculate and could be enough for just placing camera (in case wireframe or shaded view are more complicated to add)

Zdepth and AO would be cool but...

Arion is still vapor for me.
Its like the VRAY RT running on GPU.
The video is nice but you can't run it yourself

Octane is the first one

(indeed Arion look cool, but ill stick with 99 price tag hehehe)

the next version will add directlighting + Ambient occlusion, with added subsampling make it even quicker to navigate.
let's try to focus on creating something good for preview/navigation with that,
instead of working backwards and adding opengl views...

Sam75 : WE got same card, and navigated the Museum. On the corse navigation setup im flying around the scene like a breeze!. Conclusion must be that you are doing something weird.

I just reread your initial typing.
You mean that its hard to see whats going on when navigating a its too corse. well if you let it render a bit you can clearly see distances, its much like closing your eyes and walk. then stop and notice where you are, then you can walk safley.

works for me :)
