not always .. the one with the honeycomb are actually man made for decoration
the fake wax candle have always different inside that outside and made from pure wax have golden color
there are not rules ,
I modeled the fire but at last moment I replaced it with the smoke as I did not really like the way it looks like
so I skipped the original material and added the smoke with Photoshop brush and I like it better , it would be possible
to model the smoke this way , I just got to lazy to start over again ..

I miss a glowing dot on the top of the wick.
Also the smoke looks a little bit undersized. More from a cigarette.
If you would hold a cigarette beside the candle so they fits the smoke, the diameter from the candle will be around 10cm.
For a 10cm candle, the wick would be to thick and long

the glow would be a nice touch to this I agree but comments about smoke ?
there are not rules to this , first make home work and back your words before you posting .
bellow is picture of real smoke an real candle .. is that undersized also ? well your theory do not apply ... it is pure nonsense

There is no nonsense.
The detail of the smoke in the rendered image is more for a smoke which has a greater emitter, like a cigarette.
To match the detail with the detail from your photo, you must make the smoke bigger or use an image with lesser details.
Thats what i mean.
The dimension of the smoke itself is correct, it only doesn´t fit with the detail...

now you talk about different stuff , first was diameter and undersized and now is the level of details ..
of you said first so I would agree with you as the candle smoke is more dense and diffused that smoke from paper or cigarette .. I should pay more attention on that and diffuse it more for more realistic effect .. but the first comments .. totally disagree on the size..
plus the smoke would looks totally different in cold air or warm humid air , in warmer air more diffused and shorter and sharper and longer in cold air so many possibilities there is not one preset for that

The size and the detail going hand in hand. Either the detail is wrong or the size.
So the stuff isn´t different, only looked from an other side.
Thats all what i would and will say about this...

Actually to make a better candle MEC4D, I would like for you to make the candle out of a smoke material, and the smoke should be dripping beeswax...flowing upwards in the air of course
What?!?....All of my candles at home work like this....?
It's a lovely still life image. I love the simple beauty & the smoke detail is a nice touch. I think maybe we should organize a few "Octane photowalks", where everyone get out their cameras, and shoot a few things inside & outside of our personal worlds...then remake the camera image with the tools of our choice to render in Octane (with a little bit of post work allowed). Kind of like the art class where everyone sits together & draws their interpretation of the bowl of fruit, or nude model etc... We all might learn some surprising things about our physical & virtual worlds
