I'm sure you've all seen our material ball.
It's in need of some upgrades imo.
I'd like to start a mini modeling competition for a new replacement.
The winner gets, besides having his mesh embedded in octane and used by everyone in eternal glory and fame,
one free octane license that he can keep or donate to someone else.
The competition starts now and ends in one week. Tuesday 25 May at 20:00 CET (Central european timezone)
I suggest people examine the current material ball,
examine some other material balls that are out there,
and try to make something practical.
The ball needs to include a curved floor with some checkerboard or grid,
and have text defining the dimensions of the checks so the user has a reference.
Since SSS is not too far away, some sort of subsurface and thickness additions could be helpfull.
Some general tips:
* The ball needs to be propperly UV mapped, so people can apply image textures
* The ball needs to be an object similar to the size of an coffee mug.
* Try to use the least amount of triangles, but make sure the ball is smooth and displays no smoothing artifacts
* Try to use text as geometry instead of texture maps. texture maps take a lot of space in the executable
Good luck to all
