SSS can not used with a diffuse shader??

I am testing the SSS, and neither Absorption nor scattering can work with a diffuse shader. It does not change any thing when I tweaking the values. It do not render. But it works with the specular shader as well. And I see the users in the forum all used diffuse shader to simulate the SSS. How to do it?
