I WANT TO BUILD A SYSTEM THAT WILL GIVE ME THE FASTEST SPEED IN OCTANE. SHOULD I GET 2 GTX 480 OR 3 GTX 470? I READ ΤΗΑΤ THE CARDS SHOULDN'T BE IN SLI MODE. IS THAT TRUE?

p.s. Sorry for the caps!!

Thanks!!!!!!!

i recommend 2x GTX480 so you have a lot of video memory.

Yup, its true. All cards work as independent devices. If you want to build a system that will give you the fastest speed in Octane than you should get 4 GTX 480.

3X GTX470 = 3X1280 = 3840 MB

2X GTX480 = 2x1536 = 3072 MB

I think the combination with 3 GTX470 is better. Or i am wrong???

CUDA does not allow you to combine graphics card memory, so you would be limited to 1280 MB for the 470 and 1536 MB for the 480. I believe Radiance has stated that multiple GPUs do allow for bigger rendered images, which is actually pretty nice.

I'd think the 3x470s would give you a bit higher performance than 2x480s, but at the cost of 257 MB memory. This also depends on how well the final multi-GPU system scales (which we may see pretty soon).

I am thinking of combining 4 GTX480. I so the amazing videos in youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/user/SuperGastro ... vbVzrNbiuQ

Will the 4 GTX480 provide 2 times the speed of 2 GTX480?
Can we see a demonstration of the speed of 4 GTX480 cards from the developing team?? it will be an amazing promo for the software!!!

yes, it will be 2x as fast.
we only managed to get hold of 2 cards so we can't show with 4x yet.

YOU SHOULD!

As i am an architect and i am interested mostly in architectural visualization, my proposal is to prepare an exterior/interior of a building and realtime render it with 2 (or 4!) gtx480 cards. Then send the video to www.cgarchitect.com. Also work on the materials, as the libraries is an important factor for choosing a product. Could you work on a plugin for archicad or revit?

You could use some models from google as well!
