I've tried to do google search on GPU processing and rendering in other applications, such as cinema. And I got caught up reading a year or two older forum posts where users were saying there is just no way for GPU to function properly (probably because of the VRAM limits in graphic cars) and comparing GPU computing like driving a ferrary on an offroad route, meaning it is fast, but bottlenecked in terms of transfering the data back to the PCI bus, so conventional RAM could be used..
Well, I can't beleive it, but looks like a lot of companies are still waiting and don't know what to do with all that processing power nvidia is giving to the public. Maybe because ATI still doesn't have a good implementation and they don't want to bi biased..

I mean they are usin GPU computing in the new photoshop cs5, tried the beta, and it does work smoothly while resizing, (that's the only obvious thing I noticed) and the new function that is called "content aware" something which makes photoshopping a kid's play at certain things, but not sure if it uses GPU or is it just a new feature.

Well, are you aware of some other software that will use my fresh 480core Graphical Processing Unit that also does Central Processing Units job faster.
I mean the GPU was actually firstly made to calculate a lot of geometrical and such data. But the people willing to buy those co-processing units were mostly gamers. I mean, it really is so banal and frustrating. But if it weren't for gamers, we probably wouldn't have a 480 core co-processing unit available right now.
And now so, it seems that the CPU will be here just doing the job of running the system. I would predict that in the following years every serious software manufacturer will start to make everything so it runs on the GPU.
And then the shit will start..

But right now, people still beleive that gpu computing is something to be seen in the future, so I'm really surprised that octane doesn't have a few million users right now. Like a gaming comunity such as wow online has - it just looks funny, people pay per month basis to play a game, on huge servers playing with thousand of people worldwide using such a massive amount of processing power, spent on what, some entertainment, but that is why PCs with windows in particular made it better than Macs and Linuxes, because you can make a windows machine into a gaming machine - because there are people who would buy 3 way sli 480gtx, just for the fun of it, (when I read somwhere a guy wrote just that in a forum, he's thinking about popping in a third 480gtx, just for the hell of it, immediately got my self a new one withing a week or so, I mean, I cannot beleive I would buy three gpus just to see if some games I play currently would run it a bit faster - I'm not 15. But than again. Thanks to those people, they buy technology for the other aspect of it. Fun. And everyone else benefits.
I would really like to milk that cow a bit :)

Anyway, your thoughts on GPU computing, I really wouldn't be surprised if autodesk went and bought octane render, after seeing what it does I would certainly do that if I were them - invest a lot more money and people and power into this software, I mean everything is 3d lately, and this thing really makes you smile at times, it's as fun as playing a game, I mean it's more fun because it's creative..

And so anyone knows some other software tools that are using GPU to do the processing. Some modelling tools, I think I heard some announcements in Modo or Rhino or some such.. any news ?

sorry about the long post, just had a cup of cofee :)

I really wish Octane grow. Not only because how awesome Octane is, but also because I know Radiance and Octane team is so great, they can make may dreams come true. On that node, it would be really cool to see few things done on GPU. Fluid, Cloth and hair simulation. I mean those are all big number crunching taskes that CPU suck at. Maybe once Octane team is big enough, our talented Radiance could start a new division for CUDA based simulation program. Another thing... keep the price as great as Octane please... nobody enjoy those 1k price tag per CPU tradition... such a rip off.

you have to understand we are in beta phase and are selling octane beta licenses to early adopters.
afaik for a beta product we are doing pretty good business, we've sold a LOT of beta licenses already.
I think we're probably doing the best business out of all the new startups (glare, thea, etc...)

once we have our version 1.0 final we will start the marketing and reseller/distributor market, and then things will start to boom.

keep up the good work Radiance and hang in there hahaha. I bet there are just too many sleepless nights for you.
