Hello, I am working on a really big project for an animation done in 3ds max. There is 15,000+ frames!

The 3ds max scene was built for mentalray and I want to make it work with OctaneRender and the 3ds max plugin. Right now none of the materials in the scene are showing up when rendered with Octane. It is all just showing up as white.

There is significant funding for this project so if you are skilled enough to help us figure out the best workflow to convert the scene to work with Octane then I can pay you. I can also pay you to teach me how to do this specific work with Octane if your interested.

There are nine videos in total and we are trying to setup the first one. This is a large architectural project and we are working as an outside consulting rendering and animation studio for the client. I have a system with (8) GTX 580 gpu cards so processing the final production animation will not be a problem if we can get it setup in Octane. :-)

Please contact me asap and let me know if you can help. Send me a PM (private message) if there is a way to do that through this forum. Otherwise just post here and we can exhange contact info. I will be working all day on this project. Thank you!

Hi nrygpu, i used to work with mental ray too, to me the fastest way to convert my mr materials was to use a free script (multiconverter, i think was its name) to convert materials to standart max materials, then recalibrate materials in octane which is very fast to do that :) and render...
note: converting the materials you dont loose mapping information of objects.
i donk know if there is a direct converter form MR to octane materials yet..

Spoke the other day about this project I am working on. I did find someone who is very good with Octane here in the forums to help me with converting the scene from mentalray to Octane.

However, now I am having another major technical problem with Octane problem. We have multiple computers with GPU's but for some reason they are not processing animation frames correctly.

We have:
1 system with (2) Tesla M2090's 6GB video memory each
1 system with (8) GTX 580's 1.5GB video memory each
and
1 system with (4) GTX 580's 1.5GB video memory each

The problem I am having is that when I try to run a range of frames inside of 3ds Max Design 2012 with the OctaneRender for 3ds Max plugin, it will render like 1 to 2 frames at the most and then do nothing. The system does not seem to be using hardly any resources. I have tried this on all 3 machines with the different GPU's and get the same result. We have really optimized the scene for Octane and it is only loading 900mb onto each GPU into the video memory so I do not think that is the problem. Especially with the Tesla cards since they each have 6GB of video memory.

We need to render 15,000+ frames for this project due in two weeks and I really need to figure out why this is happening asap! Has anyone had the same issue in the forums and if so how did you fix it?

Your help is much appreciated!

Hello,

I am still looking for someone to help with this project. Please let me know if any of you Octane forums members might be available to help. You will be compensated for your time!!

Please PM me to talk about further details if you are interested.

I have this really big current project and many others to do right after so there is a good opportunity for steady work here.

Thanks!

Hi,

In 2-3 weeks (approx) we should be opening the sale of our new maya integration plugin product, which will make your production a lot quicker/easier.

Radiance,

That is good news since I have some interest in using Octane to render some Maya animations. However, this does not help us if we are using 3ds max scenes that were setup for rendering out animations with 3ds max? Does it?

After buying two licenses of 3ds max Octane plugin, I must say that it is very buggy. It is not fully capable of taking advantage of all the 3ds max features and even some of the basic functions cause 3ds max to crash over and over such as rendering a range of frames.

Right now some of our frames are coming out fine and some are coming out with a lot of noise. I had to setup backburner to be able to render a range of frames but am having this bizarre issue of some frames coming out with tons of noise and some not.

In my own opinion I think it is great that you guys have a OSX and Linux version of Octane but maybe time would be better spent making sure that the Windows version of Octane worked first without so many bugs. Just my own opinion. Octane is really amazing though when it is not crashing or freezing! :D

Wait, what?
You're releasing a maya plugin that will help fix the current 3ds max plugin problems? How does that work?

i'd like to quote a former apple chairman here: "it's a magical product" - as it will need nothing less but magic to accomplish that :D

btw, in another thread karba mentioned an upcoming max update ("next week") also. hopefully this will sort out misc. problems...
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply

maybe he meant there is a big update for all products coming and it coincides with the launch of the maya plugin.
Or he didn't read the post at all, even the title is very clear "3ds max plugin"

He just doesn't sleep enough :)

This week I will make a new public release of 3ds max plugin which will fix this animation problem. It is not freezed anymore. Unfortunatelly backburner issue is not fixed yet.
