Refractive Software® is proud to announce the availability of a new version of OctaneRender® for 3ds max®: Version 1.0 beta 2.56b.
The world's fastest and most feature-rich unbiased render engine that integrates completely into Autodesk® 3ds max®.

This is a minor update over the first version we released last week, version 2.56, which includes a few important bugfixes.
We strongly recommend everyone to upgrade to this version, as it renders faster and produces less noise,
it should perform identical to OctaneRender® Standalone Edition.

3ds max® Version Requirements

This release will only work with 3ds max® Versions 2010, 2011 & 2012 / 32bit & 64x / Base & Design on MS Windows operating systems.


Notes regarding features/functionality

OctaneRender® for 3ds max® implements all functionality of OctaneRender® standalone inside 3ds max®.
Any feature that the Standalone edition supports is supported by the 3ds max® plugin.

Note that this plugin product is built against OctaneRender® Standalone v1.0 beta 2.56, which does not include instancing and object motion/transform editing.
When OctaneRender® Standalone 2.6 is released during the next weeks, the plugin will be updated shortly thereafter to include the new functionality of 2.6.
However, due to the fact that the plugin is tightly integrated in 3ds max, and requires no file IO for changes to scene or object motion, moving objects, changing scene geometry and rendering animations is already MUCH faster than with the old 3ds max export script and file IO with the standalone version, so don't be dissapointed until you actually try it. You will notice rendering animations straight from within 3ds max® is very fast. (for example: what takes 5 minutes to export/import with file IO using exporters takes 20-30 seconds with the plugin product version)


COMPATIBILITY AND OCTANERENDER STANDALONE REQUIREMENT

To run OctaneRender® for 3ds max®, you need to also have an activated OctaneRender® Standalone copy activated on the machine you wish to install the plugin onto.
You cannot purchase and use only the 3ds max plugin and use it without also owning an activated copy of OctaneRender® Standalone on your machine
.

You can purchase both the OctaneRender® Standalone Edition and the OctaneRender® for 3ds max® Edition as a reduced price bundle, purchase the bundle priced at 179€

If you already own one or more OctaneRender® Standalone Edition licenses you want to pair the plugin with:
Purchase an "OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v1.0 Beta License" priced at 99€

You can also purchase a 3, 5 or 10 pack of OctaneRender® for 3ds max® licenses,
just like OctaneRender Standalone Edition packs.


DEMO VERSION AVAILABILITY

Currently there is no demo version available of the 3ds max® plugin product.
We will be providing one soon sometime in january after the christmas holidays.


INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

At this moment there isn't automatic installation. You have to copy files to 3ds max manually.
Please read the installation text file included in the download ZIP file archive.


OCTANELIVE®

Just like OctaneRender® Standalone, The 3ds max® plugin product also needs an additional octanelive license and be activated on a machine.
This has to be done in the plugin interface panel in 3ds max, and is covered in the included PDF manual.
It can only be done after an OctaneRender® Standalone license is already activated on the machine in question.


NEW FEATURES SINCE LAST RELEASE:
  • New IES light source distributions allow you to use IES photometric data files for area lights.

BUG FIXES SINCE LAST RELEASE:
  • Right mouse сlicks on the render viewport lead to crashes - this is fixed.
  • High amount of noise and fireflies, and poor performance with Diffuse Material are fixed.
  • Image Textures is are not placed in the 3ds max archive

We have 3 separate archives available for download, for Autodesk® 3ds max® 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Each archive contains the manual and installation text file, and both 32bit and x64 versions of the plugin,
so you only need to dowload one archive for your 3ds max® version from the following download links:

Hello

Thx alot for the update...right click does not crash anymore indeed :).

a few things still remain:

1. Image texture doesn't show up in the viewport even if i press "show std map in viewport".
2. When animating just the camera with static Objects, is it normal for octane to reload all the geometry (even if they are static)? seems unnecessary...would be nice if there was a switch to tell octane to only render camera animation without relaoding geometry, this way we lose at least 20 seconds per frame (testing on 2*gtx480 with 512samples). with an animated character the scene takes 40 seconds to reload and render, if i remove the character (hide the layer) the scene takes 37seconds to reload and render...

If i use just the Octane viewport and simply shift the octane camera around, it clears after about 20seconds. (no character or deformation of any kind).

3. Im trying to get SSS Skin of a character using diffuse material as base but i cannot, its much easier SSS'ing with the specular material, any pointers plz?


Thx so much for this version...ive been testing since monday/tuesday and apart from the right click crash bug, all was stable!

1) in Max 2012 Nitrous driver works, you see the maps in viewport...with Directx does not
2) it's normal, every rendering software reload the scene. This feature can be enabled with a script
3) I tried the sss in the specular material and it works great

im using max 2011, because for me 2012 is really buggy..especially with CAT :(... oh well... i hope they fix it for directx

as for SSS... as i said, with specular material it DOES work, but im trying to do it with Diffuse material, here im finding really difficult to make it work...would u mind a little help plz..can u plz make a mat file for me having sss in diffuse which i suppose is best for skin? what would be the best way to do a realistic skin shader otherwise?

im trying to download the DAZ_Skin_Material from Live DB but for some reason i cannot..it just hangs..id like to know if there something i could emulate in max

As for the script... sadly i'm not a scripter/programmer, but would really be nice if we had this ability/script...it would really speed things up.

The camera animation only will be implemented when the instance are ready.
