That's exactly what I don't want to happen. Even though the online requirement doesn't affect me personally, I'm worried they're running this excellent product against a wall.

Anti-piracy protection:
Place "Cracked" Octane Fake (with limited functionality and stability) on every bittorent tracker and file sharing service (etc.) you can find...
This could help a lot.

I suggest everyone waits and decides when the 2.3 intermediate is released,
then make your judgement about if it's better of worse than before.

We've been working like crazy during the last weeks, to give you new these things in 2.3 (not anti-piracy code but really nice new features) that will definately be appreciated by everyone,
i find it hard to believe that when we release 2.3 people will be unhappy with it, quite the contrary.

For me it's a good idea, i stay connect 24/7 without problems, then i think at the possibility to receive instant on-line updates and materials..very good work :)

Reltime updates, online integrated material library (like maxwell), community integration...i think all that things will improve octane a lot ;)

Radiance, we all love Octane and respect hard work of ur team. All of us on this forum. We will very happy to try new features, but, as I think, Octane team must give users a choice to use internet dependence or not. Especially in case that many (as I judge in this topic) users affraid about stability of their work with internet.

And price of Octane is the best anti-piracy defence for now.

Maybe you have the choice, but without a connection you don´t have the full features...

But when I need it - I will connect to the internet and will get it. And will make anti-piracy check-up. Smthng this way. But main work must stay in offline.

radiance wrote:Hi Guys,

A lot of people here are still not understanding where i've said.
We have not delayed 2.3 to implement an anti-piracy software, in fact we are not implementing any anti-piracy system, like ubi-soft or anything else people have talked about here.

2.3 will need a network connection, not as an anti-cracking measure, but for new functionality, which at the same time makes cracked copies of octane useless.
What new functionality will being connected to internet during actual rendering bring? None as far as I can see except make Octane unreliable and there's nothing worse for a renderer then being considered unreliable.

As much as you're trying to spin it otherwise, an internet connection during actual rendering is an anti-piracy measure and a hindrance to loyal customers.

A few? The majority of people who replied here think it's a bad idea that will make octane unreliable for them.

The sad part is that probably most people who use pirated software wouldn't fork out money for an original anyway so you are not losing any money from that demographic to begin with. So you'll lose potential and existing customers who don't like the idea of a renderer that needs constant networking and still not gaining any of those that would have opted for a pirated version anyway.

:/
necko77 wrote: At the end you buy licence and if you dont like it dont buy it anymore, simple as that, you didnt spent 800 $ for this and if Octane team is wrong they will loose money too.
Actually, Yes, some of us did. I spent €500
The only reason I just bought my gtx470 was because of Octane and because I believed in it's future as a renderer. I didn't need it otherwise. And if I knew about the networking requirement I would have waited so right now I'm feeling quite uncomfortable and cheated with the situation.

Like any other pirated software: Octane will survive by being cutting edge, reliable and competitively priced. Dependence on a network connection has just thrown reliability out of the window.

Hi Radiance,

I discover this topic today, and I haven't had time to read all the 10 pages, but I'm really scared !

I have invested a lot in Hardware to use Octane (Cubix, new GPU, Win 7 Pro x64, 8 GB Ram), and I planned to purchase two GTX 480 in a close future, but this new informations is really a nigtmare for me :

For both technical and safety reasons, I have my weakest computer dedicated to internet, and my Workstation is in an other room, and not connected to the web.

All downloaded things are filterd on my internet machine, and only safe files are put on the workstation. To avoid ressources consumption and any interference when rendering, the insulated workstation has no firewall and no antivirus (not required because it uses only safe materials).

This machine will never be connected to internet. So, this means that I will not be able to use Octane any more if an internet connection is required ! :(

This choice is in my opinion the worse of all...

I have to explain the "safety" reason : I have very few customers foe my 3D works, and they are all companies asking for prototype visualisation. They create innovative processes and are also a target for piracy. When working with them, I always have to sign confidentiality agreements. I had to purchase a safe to put clients documents and the removable hard disks containing clients projects, and using a machine not connected to internet is one of the inescapable conditions to get a job, imposed by the clients.
