You can find out how much memory is being used by the system with the Nvidia settings tool. I use Linux so I don't know what it's called in Windows. This is also might be affected by other programs currently running that use vram as well. For example if I run 3D-Coat and have a large voxel object that I'm working on my vram usage will balloon up to over a Gbyte. If I include my 460 in a Octane render my 980 would look like it had only 800 MBytes of memory.
Octane always uses the smallest GPU memory as the amount of free vram that it has available.
