Son Kim, we are thinking 100% equal.
About LW Core, the NewTek roadmap never was fast, and I don't know when we will have Core ready.
LW Core arn't able to download at my NT download page. My last free update was the 9.6.
Are u testing Core? I know there are some users testing it.
So, I'm a Shiva user (a French engine for games), and it uses Collada (now DXF too).
I was using that Modo's plugin that you told... - Works fine.
So, I voto for Collada...
I was searching for RIB LW Exporters at flay.com , withwout sucess.

FBX is an incredibly robust format that is used both professionally and in education to transport animation between 3d apps. I know alot of people on the forum are blender guys and thus open source is a biggie. I love the idea behind Collada. But for me, and my work, and the work of my colleges, FBX is the choice.

If Octane has one flaw, its the lack of a connection to an external 3D Application. I don't think any of us care because you are crossing the line first in the "Rendering Revolution" and we're just overjoyed someone has made it.

But the Filmbox format is one way to give some power back to the users who are using overpriced professional applications. The ability to get cameras, lights, and complex materials from one program to another is a a Breeze and had been production proven.

Go with FBX.

Blender does also have support for FBX, I do believe.

As others support collada... yes, the very same professional packages who happen to also save in FBX (while not actually being the native format either)

No, i'm not a CORE beta tester but i know what going on behind the scene - Core won't be ready in Q1 IMO, more likely Siggraph 2010 or later.
Also good news for Collada:

As much as I love FBX, and I am a blender user, I am just happy it will supported at some point. I think that RIB support might be a little more important for me in the beginning, I look forward to trying out either method. I think that's more important then brand loyalty, which format will be easier to work with on the Octane side. Do we think ether will be ready for the v1 release hopefully this week? or will it wait for v2? Lastly, got anything planned for siggraph?

Hi,

Collada development has started and it will not be for the first beta this week unfortunately.
I think if things go well it will be in the next one after it, otherwise the 3rd...

No plans for siggraph currently, too much to do already ;)

I'd have to vote for Collada as most 3D programs are attempting to write to this format as a universal standard. The FBX is still basically a Autodesk format. If you go the FBX route then you will have two Autodesk formats to choose from RIB and FBX.

will collada support layers.... and will octane support layers :0)

It would be really handy to enable/disable layers for piece meal rendering

I think Octane will support multiple OBJ or Collada files in the same render
That mean you can separate pieces and turn them on/off ;)
But layers based on materials should be good also. To be able to turn invisibile some materials.
